St Petersburg Ballet Company

A Behind the scenes look at the St Petersburg Ballet Swan Lake. Melbourne Princess Theater

About 2 years ago i was privileged to photograph the St Petersburg Ballet company.

After long hours of rehearsals and media shoots i decided to take a fun approach to my session with the girls.

Last tours photos

This year I received a personal invite to shoot behind the scenes with the ballet company, thanks to their production manager and Michael @ MadPR.

Rather than a media call or concert performance shoot this was an up close and personal behind the scenes shoot during a live performance.

So I'm shooting side stage during act 1, ducking and weaving between some of the worlds finest ballet dancers and crew members.

Shooting side stage gave a different perspective to normal front of house shoots.

King Arthur Shoot Kryal Castle

OK so another crazy idea.......

The crew at Bohemian Rhapsody online magazine are having a photo shoot at Kryal Castle.

Should i go ? Its cold, Early morning, Long drive and RAINING...

Yeh why not I said, stumbling out of bed at 5.30am.. Its only 2.5 hours away I can do it.

Planing on a making another Behind the Scenes video and put the new Panasonic G9 through its paces on both stills and video - because i have a crazy idea of shooting stills and Video at Weddings, so this will be a good opportunity.

Accident on the freeway, traffic at a standstill, Raining - did i mention raining?

5 hours later arrived at the castle.. yep still raining..

Natasha always puts together an amazing crew of Models, Photographers. Fashion designers and stunning locations so this should be amazing ..... Did I mention the rain ???

Ok so not much chance to film and shoot the Models and fashion - the photographers had to get their shots  between showers or head indoors.. So what am I going to do.. Drove 5 hours in the rain... feeling a little grumpy by now..

So I need something to film... Ah perfect a Knight in full armor - Phillip Leitch, 2 Horses, Michelle Abela and her stunning stallion Red Rocky and Model Wiktor Hudyka who just happens to be pretty good at wielding a sword.... and yep more  RAIN..

Off to the arena.. yep more rain - just hope that the camera whether sealing isn't just sales hype.

So wet muddy and a heap of fun, managed to pull off a short 2 minute film thingy which didnt look too bad ...................

And yep both me and the camera survived ...........

Alice in Wonderland

Bass Coast Ballet Shool 2017

This has been my 6th year working with the Bass Coast Ballet School.

It has been an amazing journey watching the student grow into amazing young dancers & performers

Video Production and how it all began...

A few years ago I applied to photograph an event with an organization called the Bohemian Rhapsody Club & Online Magazine.

Run By Natasha Marchev, BRC is a non profit organization supporting local and international Designers, Artists, Musicians, Events, Models...... The list of Natasha`s amazing work is endless.

Have a look at some of her incredible projects here:

Bohemian Rhapsody Club and Online Magazine

So, it all began with a shoot minus a Videographer and a desperate call from Natasha for someone to shoot video.

Sure i can do it !!!

My knowledge of video was my camera had a little red button that recorded video.

And there the obsession with video began.

A few more shoots and a suggestion from Natasha that we should film weddings,

Thousands of hours & dollars later and we now include wedding films as part of our business.

It has been a huge learning curve with filming, audio and post production.

Have a look at our video journey so far, all thanks to Natasha and the Bohemian Rhapsody Club.

How We Shoot Weddings and what makes a Professional Wedding Photographer

Wedding photography is a fun, crazy & fast paced way to make a living.

Is it stressful ? - No.. Not if you know your job.

Ive been shooting weddings for just under 30 years, and covered 1000`s of them.

Our coverage style is Candid, Formal, Natural and Posed.

We cover each moment as required, whether its a candid moment or set up stylized shoot.

Photographers & What makes a Professional Wedding Photographer.

There are so many photographers out there today

Digital has made everyone a professional

So what makes a professional photographer?

Photography is all about light.

Understanding light is what separates a professional from your typical snap shooter.

So many times I hear from photographers " The light isn't right, or I only shoot available light.

If a photographer can only shoot when the light is right.. then they are not a professional.

"I only shoot available light" simply means I Don`t Understand How to Control Light.

I don't use fill flash = My phots are flat and dull.

Whatever the weather or light throws at us on your wedding day... We can shoot beautiful images.

As a wedding Photographer (and photographer in general) the light hast to be always right.

Learning to use fill flash and balance daylight is the number one thing that separates a professional from all the rest.

How many times do we see blown out skies, or dark subjects... Fill flash is critical.

How many times do we see blown out skies, or dark subjects... Fill flash is critical.

We don't use Photoshop!

Photoshop takes time and money...

All our images are correctly exposed at the time of taking the image.

I use the simple rule - expose for the skies and fill in the foreground/subject using fill flash/ reflectors/studio strobes.

Night Shooting

"I don't shoot at night"

I have heard this one so many times from "Professional Photographers"

Once again - I cant use flash.

I love to shoot after dark.

Some of my best images are taken after dark. I love mixing night lights with flash to create stunning images

Taken in total darkness. Lit with 2 300w Studio strobes & Softbox

Camera Gear

Can you shoot a wedding with 1 camera ?  NO

Over the years Ive had cameras fail, Dropped lenses and had flashes explode.

Without backup its Game Over - try explaining to the Bride your only camera just broke !!!

For Weddings I Shoot Nikon.

Over the years Ive used Nikon,Canon, Hassleblad ,Pentax & Olympus -

Nikon may not be everyone's choice but it works best for me.

The Cameras I use are the Nikon D610 & D7200.

A D7100 and D5200 are on standby just in case.

The D610 is a 24Mp Full frame with stunning low light capabilities.

The D7200 gives excellent image quality and the crop factor gives that extra reach when needed.

For Lenses i use the Nikon 50mm 1.8, Nikon 85mm 1.8 as my go to lenses.

For ceremony closeups and the Reception the Tamron 80 - 200 2.8 is extremely handy.

All wide angle landscape style images are shot with a Tokina 18mm 3.5

The other lenses I have - as backup are the Tamron 24- 70 2.8 and Nikon 28mm 3.5.

For lighting.

4 Yongnuo Speed lights. Of camera triggers.

LED Lights & Studio Strobes

Softboxes, Reflectors, Portable Power Packs for Strobes.

We always carry enough gear to replace anything that breaks.

If it rains we can set up a full studio indoors in minutes.

Camera Bags

I own too many camera bags!!

I transport gear in a large rolling case and just take the gear i need at the time - the rest stays in the car.

My favorite bag is a $20.00 canvas bag I found on eBay.

Its cheap and ugly and dosn`t scream Expensive Camera Gear Please Steal Me !!

If moving around a lot, i like to use a small canvas backpack.

Your Wedding Day

We shoot your full day.

No time limit

(Ive seen photographers leave 5 minutes before the bouquet toss because their time is up)

No extra charge for locations.

We are with you for your full day to ensure your day runs smoothly.

If possible we give a pre wedding shoot to get you comfortable in front of the camera.

Its Your Day

We will fit in with you and make your day as stress free as possible.

We do ask for half an hour of undivided attention for us to capture your couples shots.

How Many Images Do You receive ?

We don't take 1000`s of photos.

We take enough to cover your full day.

A typical full day is app 800 images.

Our images are delivered via digital download.

Theater & Dance Photography.

A large part of our photography includes Live event photography and filming.

We work with local and national dance schools and artists to create stunning images.

Thanks to a long association with The Bohemian Rhapsody Online Magazine & Michael Wilkie @ MAD Pr, We have been fortunate to photograph some of the best live performances and stage events. This has included international artists, Ballet companies and Theater.

Shooting Live Theater & Dance

Shooting live has been a passion of mine for many years.

Coming from a musical background, performing with orchestras and bands has given me a love of capturing artists live.

Shooting live is both challenging and rewarding. Unlike shooting in a studio or even location shoots, there is no control over lighting or "staging the setup of artists.

Timing of lighting, expressions and movement is critical in capturing the exact moment.

The Haunting

Shooting the final rehearsal of the Haunting with Cameron Daddo & Gig Clarke

Camera Gear

I shoot Nikon exclusively for live work.

The Nikon D610 has been my workhorse for the past 4 years and is incredible in low light situations. The camera has exceptional dynamic range and allows pulling detail out of shadows in the worst of lighting situations.

For Lenses my choice is the Nikon 50mm 1.8 & 85mm 1.8.

For longer reach the Tamron 80 -200 2.8 is my other option.

For backup its a Nikon D7200 & D7100

One Flew over The Cuckoos Nest

Dance Photography

Dance photography offers up a whole new set of challenges.

Along with lighting & movement, A knowledge of dance is a must.

Dancer move to music -counting the beat and timing the music is how to capture the right moment - whether its Ballet or Rock.....

Wedding Videography

Our wedding Video service covers your full day with an 8 to 10 minute highlights wedding film and coverage of your reception and ceremony.

About a year ago we added video to our packages.

Whilst we still love shooting weddings as photographers, Video adds a totally different element to your wedding day.

Its great to look through photos of your day, but to see the day bought to life in video format is a completely different experience.

With today's social media the experience can be shared online with family and friends - especially those unable to attend the day.

Our video style incorporates both a " Fly on The Wall" approach, along with posed setups to get the shots we want.

Our 30 years of wedding photography experience lets us set our signature poses as a starting point and then bring them to life.

The Gear we use.

We shoot with a variety of equipment depending on the style of shot we require.

We use a combination of Sony 4K Camcorders, Panasonic G series Mirrorless and DSLR`s.

We use the latest steady cam tech with Zhyun Crane Gimbals

Audio is captured with both camera mounted Mic`s, Lapel Mics and portable recorders.

Aerial shots make great establishing shots to give a totally different view of your wedding day.

When possible we add drone footage to your wedding highlights film.

This is subject to weather conditions and flying regulations.

We are based on Phillip Island and travel Australia Wide.
